Adopting A Wild Mustang

Story by author from our region

Lisa Holderby of Monmouth County, NJ tells the story of her experience of adopting a wild mustang from

the Bureau of Land Management in a well told, fictionalized account I think many of us have been enchanted by

cowboy movies. Nothing captivates us more than the scene of powerful horses running, manes blowing in the wind,

against a back drop of majestic mountains. In the west, mustangs are allowed to roam free on public land.

However, their numbers need to be managed. The Bureau of Land Management has been capturing

and making available for adoption these magnificent creatures for many years. Recently, the number

of adoptions have decreased. Lisa Holderby is hoping that her new book, the fi rst in a series, will

inspire others to adopt a wild mustang.

Editor’s review

Although the book is based on Holderby’s actual experience with Soleil, she chose to use a young girl

as the fictionalized main character. In this middle-grade level novel, Soleil and the humans who love

and care for her overcome life’s obstacles. Soleil, A Mustang’s Story offers young readers a look into

the experience of breaking a wild horse. It also introduces youngpeople to the plight of wild mustangs in

our country, and the very real possibility of adopting one of these animals. Told in part from Soleil’s point

of view, Holderby’s account demonstrates the time, patience and work involved in breaking a

wild horse, as well as the regular maintenance involved. I found Soleil, A Mustang’s Story to be a

realistic, interesting story that I think would engage any young person who is interested in horses.

Hi Lisa, My daughter and I met you at Red Man Ranch in New Freedom, PA on Friday, July 10.  It was very nice talking to you AND we bought your book.  Mariah started reading it as soon as we got home and wouldn’t put it down.  Well, I’m sure you can guess what’s next!  She finished it that day and came to me and said “That book was soooo amazing.  Didn’t she say she has two more books, when can we get them?”  So that’s our next question, when will the next two book be available and how do we go about getting them?

Just talking with you, we pretty much knew your book would be great.  Mariah’s one friend, that loves horses also, just borrowed the book over the weekend.  We’re sure she’ll enjoy also.

Keep us posted and thank you for your time that Friday and your gift of writing that you share with many.  We feel you’ll sell many copies as all of us spread the word.
